It’s particularly hard, especially in the fast moving and fickle world of social media, to stand out in a sea of travel writers and photographers – did you take particular inspiration from specific styles/genres when it came to creating your own look and feel for The Copenhagen Traveler?
There are a lot of passionate and skilled writers and photographers out there whom I take inspiration from, but the style of The Copenhagen Traveler has always been its own. Hopefully the brand and the website reflects me as a person and that’s really what makes the difference: we all have our own unique voice.
I’m dedicated to the world of luxury travel in particular, and my weak point is hotels with a history. If only walls could talk! It started already when I was a child and later on I decided to study Hotel Management, so I guess I’m really destined to work in this business!
Have there been any particularly difficult lessons to learn along the way that you’d like to share?
I don’t have a lot of patience, so building a brand and a voice in a business this crowded, was – and can still be – tough. Nevertheless, I’ve learned so much from it! Creating your own company gives you a set of skills that you can never obtain by studying. It’s all worth it in the end – just listen to your gut and what sets your soul on fire (even when it seems impossible and no one else believes in it). Things have a magical way of falling into place.
Where in the world have you had your most memorable moments, either professional or personal?
I used to live briefly in Portugal when I was fresh out of high school. I’ve created some pretty amazing memories there – especially because everything was so new and exciting. I can still recall some memories when I listen to a certain piece of music or smell a certain fragrance. That’s magic! Later on, I moved to Switzerland for 3 years and those were probably some of the best years in my life – so far.
What are your personal travel necessities?
I rarely travel without my music and earphones. On long-haul flights, I’ll bring a book, a moisturiser (I’m a fan of Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream) and a face mist to stay hydrated and fresh-faced.
Where’s next on your itinerary?
This year has been so exciting and I’ve managed to travel to some pretty awesome destinations! Next up is Budapest, Morocco and Paris, but I always keep room for spontaneous trips. You never know what might come up!
And what do you look forward to the most when you come home?
My bed and my desk! As much as I love to travel the world, I really appreciate homely surroundings too!
Do you have any hot tips for where you see being the next up-and-coming destination, and why?
Arctic destinations such as Greenland, Alaska, Siberia and Lapland (both the Finnish and Swedish part) are gaining more and more attention from travelers, and it’s certainly not hard to understand why! I went to Greenland for the first time this summer and it was unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced before!
What is your vision as you take The Copenhagen Traveler forward?
I have a clear vision as to where I’d like The Copenhagen Traveler to be in a couple of years, but I also keep possibilities open. I’m very creative and full of ideas, so you never know what might happen! When that’s said and done, it’s important for me to grow the brand continuously and keep inspiring people to travel the world. I’d like to put more emphasis on green travel and inspire travelers to how they can travel with respect for the world but still do it in style! I truly believe that you don’t have to compromise; you simply have to plan ahead.
We believe at Supernomad in the importance of treading lightly (in terms of environmental and social impact) when it comes to fashion – do you agree that this is also important for travel?
Certainly! With the current trend of people traveling extensively, it’s predicted that there will be 2 times more visitors in popular destinations such as Barcelona and Paris in just 10 years. We can’t ignore that and so I believe we all have a responsibility to make things run more smoothly and choose greener solutions as well. I’m not saying you have to be a bag packer or avoid flying, simply look into the options of implementing eco-friendly travel into your lifestyle. I’ve written a post about this - click here - which can hopefully inspire you.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?
Listen to your heart.
What would you say is the best part of your job?
I chose to create my own career because I’ve always wanted to be free. Free to choose wherever I want to go when I want to go! Apart from being my own boss, I’m traveling the world and meeting so many fantastic people! It never gets boring, but restless feet and a somewhat different lifestyle is part of the deal.
